Perennial plant, 40 - 80 cm, stems and leaves grouped in fascicles. Leaf sheath with hairless neck, 15- - 25 x 0.05- - 0.1 cm leaves, hairless, straight and thin. Inflorescence of panicle type, of 20 - 30cm. It blooms from September to June.

 

The classic image of the savannah is extensive fields of grass. I found a piece of land where it was possible to walk among them, and have the feeling of being outside the city, something ironic for a plant that was so common in the São Paulo landscape. In Praça da Nascente it was the predominant species before urbanization, when the place was still called Morro do Careca. Former residents recognized the specimens we reintroduced.

Distribution: From Mato Grosso to Rio Grande do Sul, in cerrado, dry field and cerradão.

Situation in São Paulo: Occasionally occurs in vacant lots on the periphery, in the Rodoanel Metropolitano de São Paulo and on the edges of highways. In the past, it formed dense massifs, but today that view has become difficult.

How to plant: The transplant must be done taking into account a very generous area of ​​soil around the root ball and care must be taken not to affect the root, which is very delicate. When planting, make a generous pit with a soft earth base that helps the root to develop. From the first days, water daily, keeping the soil and foliage moist until the plant adapts. You should always plant in groups that may be associated with small plants, such as macela, pixirica, araçá, and other grasses, such as the ass-tail, always with direct sunlight.

Uses: Plant with great ornamental potential due to its stony appearance, small size and extreme resistance to drought. With its leaves it is possible to make crafts. According to Seu Miguel, a veteran resident of the region, it was formerly harvested at Morro do Careca to be used as a filling for scarecrows and dolls for the training of Judas, a custom that ended up with the plant in the city. It was also used to make garlands for the festivities of São João.

But I believe goat-beard grass definitely doesn't agree.
